Dean Britt –
FieldGenius
In 2023 I purchased a Leica TS16P Robot and the Carlson RT4 with Carlson SurvPC. I had traditionally used the Leica proprietary Data collection for over 28 years, which I have always found to be more of a thinking-out-of-the-box mindset. The Carlson SurvPC, to me, was a baseline data collection with the basic functions that will get the job done and a solid platform with somewhat of a learning curve, even in basic routines. 2024 rolls around, and I want to purchase a GPS Base/Rover system. Bench-Mark was on my radar because they sold the FieldGenius data collection software, and their big selling point has always been that the end-user can control their line work and it is easy to use vs. linework tied to a code when using automated drafting. The more you use it the more you realize how powerful and the flexibility you have with it in the field.
I figured if Leica supports the software, there must be something to it. There was a small learning curve at first, and then the software started unveiling itself daily with functions that you always say,” I wish it would do this.” FieldGenius does that. I run the data collection; I don’t have to settle for what’s there, from the anchor bolt layout, which has already come in handy, laying out bolt patterns, to the auto HI when setting up my Leica Instrument. They closed the window to mistakes by using the stake to a line/figure; no more looking at your plans and tracing a line from one point to another; you tag that line, and you know you’re staking to the correct column line. Group coding and multiline work have shaved off a lot of walking and more locating. It’s really a work smarter, not harder, data collection software. FieldGenius has a CoGo History Viewer that records your manual traverse angles and distances vs just showing coordinates in the raw file. I do wish they would add a routine to email job data back to the office.
