FAQs

Yes. The Mesa 4 is designed to run full Windows desktop applications, making it compatible with software such as FieldGenius and many other surveying, GIS, and construction programs. Its rugged design allows you to use the same professional software in the field that you rely on in the office.

It’s an add-on, not standard. The base Mesa 4 configuration doesn’t include hot-swap capability, “Hot Swap Battery” is listed separately under Custom Build Options on the quote form. If running out of battery mid-session without powering down matters for your workflow, make sure to select that option when requesting a quote rather than assuming it’s included.

It’s assembled in the United States, which is a real factor if you’re bidding on federally funded infrastructure or DOT projects with Buy America requirements, many competing rugged tablets are assembled overseas. That said, “assembled in the US” and formal Buy America Act compliance aren’t automatically the same thing depending on the specific contract language you’re working under, confirm the exact compliance documentation you need with our team before citing this on a bid.

8GB is enough for standard field software like FieldGenius handling typical point clouds, linework, and day-to-day data collection. 16GB is worth the upgrade if you’re running larger design files, working with heavier point cloud or BIM data in the field, or tend to keep multiple applications open at once, the kind of workload that would make a laptop feel sluggish too. If you’re unsure which you need, err toward 16GB, it’s a harder upgrade to make after purchase than it is to select now.

It’s for connecting legacy equipment that communicates over RS-232 rather than Bluetooth or USB, older total stations or instruments that predate wireless data collection. Most current-generation GNSS receivers and total stations connect over Bluetooth, so you likely don’t need it unless you’re running specific older hardware that requires a physical serial connection.

The differences are internal, not physical. Beyond the Windows 11 upgrade, the Mesa 4 runs a newer N200 processor with meaningfully more processing headroom than the Mesa 3, noticeable if you’re working with larger files or more demanding software. Since the shell and screen size are the same, existing Mesa 3 accessories like pole mounts and cases should carry over, confirm specific accessory compatibility with our team if you’re mixing old and new hardware.
